How to choose a product to make to sell
By Alison Small of The Beadery on the Boulevard
One of the most difficult things to accomplish is to choose a product that is not saturating the market. Something that would be fun to make, that would sell well. To start, you need to do a lot of market research. The places to do this research are a plenty. First of all, go to every craft and art show you can find. Pay to get in! These shows are more professional than the little church fairs that run around the holidays. As a person that sold at craft shows for many years, I would prefer to sell at a higher end show that I paid a lot of money for my booth space and where the customers have to pay to get in. If someone is paying to enter a show, they are willing to part with some cash. They are shopping for something and will more likely be a buyer. Walk the show. Take you time. You paid to take this walk, get your money’s worth. Don’t forget to get a receipt for the admission price, this is a tax deduction. (You can’t take your entire family and all of their friends as a tax deduction, but your ticket and a guest are acceptable). While you are walking the show, stop at EVERY booth. Look at their product, what is it, how is it made, is it something you would buy if you were not a crafter. Look at pricing, decide if this is a fair price. Most importantly, look for something that is NOT there. When you find that something, you have found your nitch in the craft world. After visiting several shows in your area, its time to broaden your market research. Start looking on craft selling sites on the internet. What is everyone selling? www.etsy.com is a good place to start. Do some searches on the web for handcrafted merchandise. You will be surprised what you will find. Don’t forget to look at eBay. They have tons of handcrafted things for sale. Now you need to go to the upscale mall. Walk around the mall looking at different products they offer. If you are selling jewelry, look at jewelry in every store. If you choose to make soap, go to the stores that specialize in soap. Look at their product, the size, shape, color, scent, packaging and price. Can you create a piece of soap that is nicer than this one, packaged as well or better and sell it at a comparable price? Of coarse you can. Once you have done all of your homework, you will be able to decide on a product that will be fun to make and as much fun to sell. Wait till you see how good it feels when people start buying the things you have designed and made with your own hands. Good luck - happy hunting!!!!!
